EMBROIDERIES
This series—which has titles starting with Small Vase of Flowers—is about acknowledging the not fully-known history of a great aunt who was a botanical artist in the 1940s. I have a painting by her in my living room, full of all of the traditional conventions of a still life, and I have always loved it. This series is also inspired by Maria Sibylla Merian (b. 1647) a botanical artist who lived and worked in Germany and Amsterdam. Also, I love the ever-present promise of the future that is inherent in gardening.
